RAF Fylingdales

RAF Fylingdales, Pickering, North Yorkshire, ,

RAF Fylingdales is a small unit on the North Yorkshire Moors and was first declared operational in 1963 as one of 3 radar sites in the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS), the other 2 sites being in Alaska and Greenland. Today, the Unit comprises approximately 80 Service personnel, 80 MOD Policemen and women, and a further 200 civilian staff and contractors. However, even though we are a small unit we have an extremely important role to play in Defence and we maintain the highest standards of service. Being small and in a remote location can have its benefits – the Station community is tight knit, which lends itself to a positive and friendly working environment, and we are in one of the most picturesque parts of the country with Whitby and Pickering only a 20-minute car journey away. And for those who decide to live on base we have some excellent sporting facilities and some of the rarest species of plants, birds and animals on our estate.
