Month of the military child banner.

April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, a time to honor the resilience and courage of children from military families. Recognizing the unique challenges these children face, from frequent relocations to the absence of a parent, the initiative aims to acknowledge and celebrate their strength.

Led by the Armed Forces Families and Safeguarding Team (AFFS) at the MOD, the month is marked by a series of engaging activities, supported by various charities, schools, and MOD departments. The highlight of the month is "Purple Up! Day" on the last Friday, when everyone is encouraged to wear purple as a symbol of support for military children.

Here are six ways schools and organizations can participate in celebrating these inspiring young individuals:

  1. Art and Poetry Competitions: Encourage children to express their experiences and emotions through creative competitions.
  2. Educational Assemblies: Hold assemblies to educate and share insights about the lives of service children.
  3. Purple Up! Day: On April 26, wear purple and organize events to show solidarity with military children.
  4. Permanent Reminders: Work with children to create lasting symbols of support within your organization or school.
  5. Story Sharing: Facilitate a 'Share your story' project, allowing military children to share their journeys and foster understanding.
  6. Geographical Connections: Use maps to mark and discuss the various places military children have lived, integrating their experiences into educational activities.

Join the initiative to support our military children, particularly the FAB (Families of Armed Forces) children, by participating in these meaningful activities. Your involvement can make a significant difference in their lives, highlighting their contributions and the sacrifices they make as part of military families.
